Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The La Romanée 2011 has a floral bouquet, much more feminine than the La Grande Rue: neatly integrated, plush new oak that is seamlessly embroidered with the macerated red cherries, fresh strawberry and cranberry aromas. These eventually make way for undergrowth -- damp moss in an autumn glade. The palate is very well balanced with ripe, silky smooth tannins. There is a sweet core of plush, kirsch-like red fruit and fortunately it retains fine tension all the way through to the seductive, sorbet-fresh finish.

Bright red. Very heady nose with immediate impact of layers on the nose though pretty uptight at the moment. Masses of tension and angst. The top wines of this domaine are completely different in character and apparent winemaking style from the village wines. Ambitious with a blackberry concentrate note. Still quite marked acidity though lots of fresh fruit too.

An ultra-fresh, restrained, cool and superbly elegant nose features a wonderful array of spices along with the distilled essence of red cherry liqueur violet, plum and rose petals along with the hallmark wet stone nuances. There is equally superb focus to the refined, delineated and powerful medium-bodied flavors that are shaped by exceptionally fine tannins that are perfectly well-integrated on the energetic and explosively persistent and mildly austere finish that quickly tightens up. This doesn't have the mid-palate density of its 2010 and 2012 counterparts but I very much admire the seamless delivery.
