The 2013 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru has a slightly earthier and more masculine bouquet than the Chambolle Village, here the fruit a tad darker with wet gravel scents filtering through. There is something a little opaque about the aromatics - mysterious even. The palate is clean and precise, linear in the mouth with well judged acidity, not a powerful wine but detailed and quite sophisticated. It needs another 4-5 years in bottle, but it will be worth the wait. This is a beautifully crafted wine.

‘Young’ vines (10-25 years old) in Le Musigny. Very much richer on the nose, and actually if anything less precise than the village wine. Juicy and round. Still a little hidden. Muscular and with a lot deeply embedded in it. Broad raspberry fruit on the mid palate and great depth on the end but still unformed. All on the end. Peacock’s tail. Rather kicks you in the teeth.

Here the highly restrained nose is a bit more deeply pitched with perfumed and spiced aromas of pomegranate, lilac, plum and exotic tea scents. There is a suave yet delineated mouth feel to the much bigger, richer and more obviously mineral-driven middle weight plus flavors that possess a highly sophisticated texture, all wrapped in a naturally sweet and balanced finish that delivers outstanding depth and length. Lovely quality and a good way to buy Musigny more reasonably.
