The 2012 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru, which as usual comes from vines aged between 15 and 25 years, which Francois Millet described as “young men,” has a self-effacing, floral bouquet with lifted brambly red berry fruit and hawthorn. The palate is a step up from the village cru: the tannins finer with more overall finesse and harmony. It builds gently towards a spice-tinged finish with just a hint of black pepper on the aftertaste. This is divine.

‘Young’ vines (10-25 years old, average 16 years) in Le Musigny. Very powerful attack – intensely up-the-nose. Lots of freshness and minerality rather than sweet fruit on the nose. Massive palate impact – spreads really right across the palate. Firm finish and masses of subtlety on the way there. Distinctive in terms of texture. Long and sinewy. Lot of energy. No one would be disappointed by this. Firm finish after hugely impressive impression.

Deep but translucent ruby. An exceptionally floral nose displays cool and airy aromas that seem to be composed of essence of raspberry and dark currant along with plenty of spice nuances. There is an intense minerality to the medium-bodied flavors that possess fine mid-palate concentration, all wrapped in a saline-inflected and explosive finish that flirts with austerity before rounding off. 2012 is clearly a very powerful vintage for this wine and it is going to require plenty of bottle age.
