Very dark color. Deep, rich, brooding fruit-filled nose requires aeration to fully reveal itself, becoming more dramatic as it opens. There are notes of smoke, tar, violet, dried roses, and an enticing sauvage that beckons one to taste. We are not disappointed, as the 1985 has more density, concentration, richness, precision, and viscosity than the other wines in this first flight of four. The acidity is tremendous. If anything, we are drinking this bottle too young, as it’s still a little tight and tannic. Everything is in balance. Sweet black cherry fruit evolves into a very long, powerful, almost tart finish. Even someone with a palate of stone could tell they were in the presence of greatness. It wasn’t a 100 pointer tonight, but close.

Unreal for its sheer hedonistic quality. Oozes rich and ripe fruit and sweet wood character, but doesn't taste overripe. Loaded with cassis and mineral flavors backed by tar and spice. Much thicker and darker in color than the '88, which is more elegant. In its history the winery has made no other Sassicaia with such massive tannins, yet the texture of the wine is supple. Made from very small yields. Tempting now.--Sassicaia vertical. Best after 2004.

Magnum. Amazing depth of colour and luminosity. So sweet and robust. Rather out of the mainstream line of finesse, but so delicious – and apparently indestructible. So wonderful I just lost myself in it rather than writing a tasting note.
