Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 La Romanée Grand Cru replicated its impressive showing last year. It has a beautiful, very pure bouquet with raspberry, briary, plenty of undergrowth and bay leaf all with fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with supple and lithe tannin, crisp acidity, gentle grip with superb tension and structure on the pixelated finish. Deeply impressive -- as you would expect given the current market value of this wine! Tasted September 2016.

Monopole. Average age of the vines is about 60 years old. Very dark and brooding. Bit reduced for now but fabulous fruit. Nothing like the depth of a Romanée-Conti but very pure and intense at the same time. Like a stringed instrument with its vibrato quality. Great intensity and freshness. Lovely persistence. Very pure but a hint of crisp green apples rather than anything richer. All very youthful.

This is also quite floral though the kaleidoscopically spicy nose of assorted red and black currant and plum aromas is cool, airy and restrained. The mineral-inflected, focused and velvet-textured medium weight flavors possess a suave mouth feel on the driving, intense and impeccably well-balanced finish that just goes on and on. As is virtually always the case this is very classy juice though note well that it's going to require plenty of cellar time. In sum, this is one of the greatest wines of the 2013 vintage.
