Now at 13 years of age, the Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru les Amoureuses 2001 has a surprisingly reserved nose with broody, blackberry fruit. With continued aeration it curiously develops an almost Merlot-like character. The palate is aloof at first but gradually opens up to reveal its smooth, velvety interior. This is a very polished Amoureuses–you could almost argue too polished. Yes, there is a cheek-pinch of white pepper on the finish, but somehow it is missing the charm of the Chambolle 1er Cru 1999 tasted in tandem.

I have not had good luck with this wine as some are quite good and others are just terrible as some bottes display heavy reduction while another was oddly lactic with aromas of pungent cheese. However, on the plus side when you do come across a good bottle they can be lovely. The most recent bottle exhibited plenty of secondary character on the softly spicy nose with floral, herbal and exotic tea aromas. There is good richness to the seductively textured, even velvety flavors that possess fine intensity on the mouth coating finish where just a hint of acidity arises. This is really quite good and about the only nit is a hint of finsihing warmth. For my taste this is just about ready and it will have peaked in only another year or two. Tasted several times with very inconsistent notes.
