The 1999 Richebourg Grand Cru is very special, bursting from the glass with a lavish bouquet of raw cocoa, Asian spices, ripe plums, rose petal and potpourri. On the palate, it's full-bodied, ample and perfumed, with a gourmand, layered mid-palate, melting tannins and a long, beautifully delineated finish. In recent vintages, I've tended to prefer the Domaine's Romanée-Saint-Vivant to its Richebourg, but in 1999 it's the latter that has the edge.

Like all of the Leroy '99 grands crus, this is still quite youthful and in this case, still almost completely backward with a spicy, ripe and densely fruited but grudging nose that even several hours of aeration failed to completely liberate. The huge and equally dense full-bodied flavors are equally primary as they have, seemingly, lost none of the structure that I orginally saw in cask though I hasten to emphasize that neither is it hard, dry or aggressive, merely quite firm, all wrapped in a sappy and extract-suffused finish that goes on and on. This is perhaps somewhat less elegant than the best in the Leroy range as the tannins are a touch less refined but overall, this should be sensational in time (thought note that lots of time will be necessary). Tasted twice with consistent notes.

Ripe and bordering on jammy, with black cherry and plum flavors. What texture. Silky and full of sweet fruit, it's powerful and balanced, with a long finish. Domaine Leroy non-blind tasting (6/08). Best from 2020 through 2050.

Mid crimson, and much more convincing than the Richebourg 2010. Intense, rich, broad and explosive and exuberant. Stuffed full of dramatic ingredients with a mass of fine tannins lurking underneath. Hint of something (deliciously) fungal and a floral note too. Extremely persistent.
