Consistently scoring between 98-100, the superb 1982 Margaux may be slightly bigger, bolder, and more masculine than vintages produced over the last 15-20 years. Its dark plum/purple color is followed by notes of melted tar intermixed with sweet cassis and floral underpinnings. Very full-bodied and dense for a Chateau Margaux, with a slight rusticity to the tannins, it boasts blockbuster power, richness, and impressive aromatics. It appears set for another 30-40 years of life. Release price: ($360.00/case)

This relies on sheer muscle, with dark, plush layers of warmed fig, currant preserves and charcoal lined with extra notes of roasted vanilla, espresso and bittersweet cocoa. The tannins are ever-so-slightly drying on the finish, and this rumbles more than glides, lacking the full range of perfume and beguiling elegance the greatest Margauxs have.—Non-blind Château Margaux vertical (December 2013). Drink now through 2035.

Well-coloured garnet. Initial nose is still surprisingly oaky and youthful. Under that sweet spice, there’s a touch of leather and dried herbs but the sweetness persists. So silky and plenty of bright expressive sweet red fruit with a delicate leathery overlay. Very very long, and its the fruit that persists not the tannin. Spreads across the palate and extends way back like water filling every nook and cranny.
